The Prodigal God

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." - Colossians 3:16

The Prodigal God H.O.M.E. Group Campaign

The Prodigal God is a seven-week Bible Study produced by Brookfield Lutheran Church to help Christians grow to understand the heart of God toward all people. The study is based on the book "The Prodigal God" by Timothy Keller.

This Bible Study is intended to give a greater insight to the true Heart of God - to seek and save the lost. Timothy Keller's book provides the context for this journey, as it delves into the heart of Jesus' message to all of us "younger brothers" and "older brothers" in the famous parable of The Prodigal Son found in Luke 15.

Each of the seven chapters in the book make up the seven sessions of this study.

Session 1: He Welcomes Sinners starts the series by focusing on the first two parables in Luke 15 - The Lost Sheep and The Lost Coin. Here we learn that God is in the business of finding lost sinners.

Session 2: Give Me My Share exposes idolatry in our lives and leads us to repent.

Session 3: He Came To Himself point out the difference between legalistic repentance and gospel repentance. It also shows how sin and selfishness destroys the faith community.

Session 4: He Refused To Go In identifies a a type of lostness rooted in the desire to achieve our own salvation.

Session 5: And He Kissed Him focuses on forgiveness, and the great expense of granting forgiveness. We learn about the sacrifical cost Jesus was willing to endure, making him our True Elder Brother.

Session 6: Everything I Have Is Yours teaches that true hope and peace comes through living the gospel in the presence of Christ.

Session 7: We Had To Celebrate focuses on the great eternal feast of God the Father at the end of time. At the costly sacrifice of Jesus Christ, an invitation is freely extended to all people.

We have to celebrate - the lost is found! We can all relate to coming home and gathering around a meal as family. It is an opportunity to laugh and share life. There is an intimacy in that gathering. The Lord's Supper is a foretaste of the eternal feast in heaven, and provides intimacy with Christ Jesus.

Everything God has is ours, in Christ Jesus. The parable of the two lost sons is missing a true elder brother that is willing to reconcile and restore the family, no matter what the personal cost. Jesus is that True elder brother for us.

Forgiveness is God absorbing our debt. With any debt, someone has to pay. Either you inflict the pain of repayment on your debtor, or you sacrifice personally in order to free the offender. Can we overcome our sense of superiority and have the compassion to forgive others as God has forgiven us?

Obedience doesn't earn God's acceptance. When the elder brother refuses to join the celebration, we gain a deeper understanding of lostness which includes those of us that seek to gain acceptance through joyless, mechanical obedience. The Gospel message is that God accepts us, and now it is our joy to obey Him.

Repentance is the beginning of restoration. We also find that a repenting community welcomes accountability. The difference between the world's view of repentance and the Biblical view of repentance is discussed, as well as the nature of true repentance.

Idolatry assults the family. Both the younger brother and elder brother want the father's things and not the father. We too have put "things" above our Heavenly Father. The good news is that our Father divided His life for the possibility of redemption, so that family can be restored.

Sheep are helpless and need to be rescued. Shepherds, on the other hand, control the life of their sheep and provide everything for the sheep. We are lost sheep and our Shepherd frees us sinners so we can admit we are sinners.
