Serving in the Community

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." - Colossians 3:16

Life in Service - Devotion 2

“He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord are you going to wash my feet?' Jesus replied, 'You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.'”  - John 13:6-7

Time is everything. It’s been said that in our current generation, time is its currency - its medium of exchange - more important than even dollars and cents. So, if God was like us and did what we do, he might claim he’s too busy to handle our problems, hear our prayers or pick us up when we are down because that will take too much time. Imagine if God only had so much time to invest in each of us. After so many hours, if we didn’t provide some sign of success He would simply move on and leave us standing alone and abandoned. We do that all the time. I mean let’s be honest, who can deny using the phrase, “I just don’t have time for that!” Yet, the timeless treasure of Jesus’ love is in serving others and that does take time.

Take the time to serve others if only with a casual conversation or with a word of encouragement. People see that act of kindness as a genuine outreach to them and their issues of concern. It only takes a few minutes and is easy to do.

Lord, may I be ever ready to “wash someone’s feet”. Thank you for the example You provided of servanthood. Amen.
