Life in Mission - Devotion 5
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” - 1 Peter 3:15
Most of our Life in Mission is directly related to actively pursuing Life in the Word, Service and the Cross. As people see our lives, hopefully we will be witnessing the love of Christ and they will want to know what makes us tick. Here is where St. Peter says we should be prepared with an answer. Do you have an answer?
In my work as a family doctor, I am in a position frequently to share my story. Just the other day I had a single mother in her 20’s come to me with depression. She stated, “Sometimes I just don’t know my purpose or what life is all about”. Do you see the opportunity that I saw? I spent the next 10-15 minutes sharing with her God’s love and purpose for her life and encouraged her to find a church and start taking her faith life seriously. As you witness to others either with your personal testimony, or sharing Jesus, it gets less intimidating and easier to do. We are called to be in Life in Mission and we know we will be most effective life on life, so have something to say when asked to give a reason for the hope you have. Practice in your small groups or with a prayer partner. And then try it out on “real people”. Remember we are to be faithful to “go and make disciples”, but it is God’s job to convict the heart. You can share the story of Jesus or your personal testimony, but share. You might be surprised with the results.
Heavenly Father, help me get my story straight. Enable me to be ready to give an answer for the hope I have when asked. Use me and my story to touch the lives of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
