Blessed Be Your Name

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." - Colossians 3:16

Life in Mission - Devotion 3

One of my favorite songs we sing Sundays in church is the song “Blessed Be Your Name”. If you really reflect on the words, it is the song of Job. We are deciding to bless God’s name no matter what. Do you realize that is what you are singing? It is easy to be happy with God when life is good, but blessed be Your name when I get cancer, my child dies, I am financially ruined, I have a stroke. I get a shiver down my spine when we sing that song. I was discussing this with another member and she said she trembles when we sing that song!

Blessed Be Your Name is a Life in the Cross song. We are going to praise Jesus and bless His name no matter what. In John 16:33 Jesus promises us that we will have trouble in this world, so why do we so often seem surprised when bad things happen? The promise is that we will have peace in Jesus and that He has overcome the world! How powerful can be our witness to the unbelieving world when we can face the tragedies and trials of life and still bless God! When we can do that through the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, then we are really engaged in Life in Mission.

Author of Creation, grant us by the power of your Holy Spirit to live daily with our eyes fixed on You the author and perfecter of our faith, so that we might deny ourselves no matter what comes our way and praise Your holy name. And that in so doing we may have opportunity to point others to Jesus. Amen.
