Rooted and Built Up

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." - Colossians 3:16

Life in Jesus Pathway - Devotion 2

The begonias in the planter at home look better every day. Broad green leaves and bright flowers are telling me that the roots are doing a good job of providing everything the plants need. If I remember to water regularly, and the chipmunks stop digging around, we can expect beautiful results all through the summer.

Continuing to grow in Christ takes regular feeding. If we get disconnected from God’s Word and prayer for very long, we can’t expect to grow deeper in our relationship with Christ. “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6. Sometimes we think that once we are saved by faith in Jesus we can coast along with little thought about God afterward. We underestimate the spiritual strength it takes when the trials and testing of our faith come our way. Spiritual roots give our lives the staying power to trust Christ and get to know the mystery of his love and faithfulness.

Moving from me-focused life to a God-focused life doesn’t just happen. If others begin to notice that God is becoming more important to you, it’s a good indication that you are growing in Christ.

Dear Lord, please encourage me to continue to follow You by being rooted, built up, and strengthened in the faith. Amen.
